- Jun 07, 2018 MacOS Sierra runs great on my 2011 iMac, better than you'd expect for a 6-year-old Mac; but I have installed an SSD. On the original spinning hard drive, the latest MacOS will run but performance does suffer, and the same is true even for brand new Macs that don't have an SSD.
- This Mac is not supposed to be running this software used real Mac that was supported to instal on external drive then used dosedude1 pach for high Sierra even though there is no patch I used the.
Mac's don't need defragging as OS X automatically writes 2Gb or below sized files to one contiguous space on the drive. There are certain cases where's it's needed to free up a large spaces on the drive, but not something everyone has to do.

Hi Reddit My iMac has been incredibly slow for last 6 months. I have been dutifully updating to new macOS because of Photos app requiring that. It has 1TB storage (200GB free).
The issue is that system is incredibly slow. It takes ages to log in, open Safari and working in two apps at the same time is not even an option. Every time I type something, there is a 3-4 second lag.
I've been thinking about RAM upgrade, but I think that the real issue is not lack of RAM. On average, when nothing is running (except for Google Drive etc in the background) I have around 500mb of 4GB idle.
I've tried booting in Safe Mode and the system runs much-much smoother than in Normal Mode. The question is: how do I clean up? I don't really have a bunch of unknown apps installed (e.g. no MacKeeper). What do I do? Reinstalling OS is something I try to avoid as there is to much to back up.
